Turn the Page KC Summer Reading Splash: Luncheon Honoring Mayor James

On Wednesday, June 19, 2019, Turn the Page KC and Mayor Sly James will host the Summer Reading Splash, our annual citywide summer reading celebration sponsored by Andrews McMeel Universal. More than 2,000 kindergarten through third grade students will attend the event, which includes activities and performances designed to get kids excited about reading during the summer. This year we are especially excited since every student who attends will have the opportunity to shop at a free book fair, and select the books they will take home with them to read over their break from school.

Prior to the start of the program, we will host a luncheon in the Sprint Center Founders Club to recognize Mayor James’ contributions to third grade reading proficiency in Kansas City during his eight years in office. We have a couple of surprise tributes planned, and we invite you to attend what we guarantee will be a very special program.

Tickets to the luncheon can be purchased individually for $65 each or you can purchase a table for ten people for $500. Individuals and corporations who support the event with a table purchase will be listed as sponsors in the event program and on publicity materials. Reading over the summer is incredibly important for our kids. In fact, students who don’t keep reading when they are not in school can fall one or more months behind, while their classmates who continue reading move further ahead. We also know that 61% of kids growing up in poverty don't have a single age-appropriate book in their home. Through the Summer Reading Splash, we can help ensure that kids continue reading over the summer, and that they have access to books in their home.
